The Newspack Themes support Featured Images on posts and pages.

The recommended minimum size for Featured Images is at least 1200px wide. Image aspect ratios will be respected on single posts with ‘Small’ and ‘Large’ featured image display options (outlined below).

Featured Image Position

Single posts offer a handful of display options for the Featured Image:

Default

By default, the default option is the Large image placement, but it can be changed to any of the other options in the Customizer (steps below).

Large

The Large featured image option will add the image immediately under the post title, at 1200px wide. If the original image is smaller than 1200px wide, this style will automatically fall back to the Small featured image placement, to make sure things don’t look odd.

Small

The Small featured image placement will add the image at the top of the content area, displaying it at up to 780px wide.

Behind Post Title

The Behind Post Title featured image option will add the image behind the post title, with a semi-transparent dark overlay, to make sure the post title is legible.

With this setting, the featured image is sized to display at roughly the same height as the browser window. Because of this, parts of the image can be cut off. It’s recommended this feature image setting be used when it would be acceptable to lose part of the image.

Note: When this option is selected, the Highlight Menu will not be visible on the post.

Beside Title

The Beside Post Title featured image option will display the featured image on one half of the screen, and the post title on the other, against a solid background.

With this setting, the featured image is sized to display at roughly the same height as the browser window, and half its width. Because of this, parts of the image can be cut off. It’s recommended this feature image setting be used when it would be acceptable to lose part of the image.

Note: When this option is selected, the Highlight Menu will not be visible on the post.

Hidden

The Hidden featured image option keeps the featured image from displaying on a single post, while still having it assigned to display with the Homepage Posts block, archive, search results, or when the post is shared on social media.

Change Featured Image Position on a post

You can change the Featured Image Position on a single post by following these steps:

  1. Create a new post, or edit an existing one.
  2. In the right sidebar, select Document tab at the top. If the right sidebar is not visible in the editor, it can be opened by clicking the cog icon in the top-right corner:
  1. Scroll down to the Featured image section — inside, there will be radio buttons with the different position options:
  1. Select the position you would like to use for the current post, and click Update.

Change Featured Image Position default

You can change the Featured Image Position default by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Customize > Template Settings.
  2. Select the new default from the list:
  1. Click Publish.

This will change the position of the Featured Image on all posts that still have Default selected. If a post has one of the other options selected, that setting will still be respected.

Other Placements

Featured Images are also displayed in the follow sections of the site:

Pages

On Pages, Featured Images have a similar appearance to the ‘Small’ placement on posts:

Archives

On Archive pages, like Category, Tag or Author Archives, Featured Images are displayed with each post.

For most posts, the Featured Image will sit to the left of post. The latest post will display both the Featured Image and post title larger than the rest to highlight it.

Search Results

In the search results, the Featured Image is displayed to the left of each post.

Featured Image Captions

If a Featured Image has a caption, it will display underneath the image:
